The first Sensational Saturday Market held on Cross Hill car park on Saturday has been hailed as a great success by organisers and traders alike.Organised as part of the Real Driffield Sensational Summer Campaign by the Town Team, the aim was to add an exciting new element to the Driffield high street experience, and judging by the response from the general public, it would seem that the market did just that.
Almost 40 traders turned up, more than expected, selling locally produced food, up cycled items, arts and crafts, plants and designer makers. Many have commented that the town seemed very busy on Saturday and provision had been made to cater for additional cars, with both Dewhirst and the Methodist Church making their usually private car parks available. The Town Team had also prepared to welcome new visitors with cross street and lamp post banners promoting what is best about the town. Town Clerk, Claire Binnington, said We talked to all the traders who were incredibly positive about the market and they are all looking forward to the next one on August 17. There was a fantastic atmosphere with buskers and childrens entertainment, with resident businesses also making the most of the increased footfall.
The Mayor, Coun Heather Venter also said: It was lovely to see so many people coming to Driffield to see our new maker market, the atmosphere was great and I would just like to thank everyone who has been involved in organising this event and that its success can only mean that more is made of these kind of markets here in the town in the future.Helena Moss, Driffield Renaissance Coordinator, said: We hope that after the success of this first market that it will get bigger and better. There are already more traders booked for next month and we hope to encourage more local food producers to take part.
"Each summer, the Berwyn Park District, a WSSRA partner, offers a terrific day of outdoor activities at their Back to School event. Carnival booth games, a complementary grilled lunch, a trackless train, petting zoo and school supply give-a-way are scheduled. WSSRA will also offer free craft activities for children to make and take home. Volunteers will be on hand to help the families complete the crafts. Children with disabilities are especially encouraged to visit the WSSRA craft tents," said Gretchen Dennis WSSRA Superintendent.Entrance to the Back to School Carnival is free. For as little as $5, guests can have even more fun and make a splash by adopting a plastic duck for the annual race down Proksa creek that day.
"The 15th annual Duck Splash will begin at 3:45 p.m. It's a race of hundreds of cute little plastic ducks down the creek in beautiful Proksa Park. Some donors adopt one duck for $5 and others will adopt a three duck trio for $13. The ten fastest ducks will earn a prize for their sponsors. Everyone at the event runs down to the creek to watch hundreds of duck float to the finish line. While music plays, we all cheer on the ducks. The grand prize is $500. Duck race proceeds help WSSRA provide scholarships and quality recreation services for children and adults with disabilities. Winners need not be present to win the race prizes," Dennis explained.
If you remember Walk Like an Egyptian with the Bangles or doing the Running Man to Janet Jacksons Rhythm Nation, you remember the 80s.The Time Warp from Rocky Horror Picture Show was all the rage in the late 1970s, and Los Del Rio and the Macarena was heard everywhere in the mid-1990s.Hall said shes looking forward to a return visit with the orchestra at Cannonsburg Ski Area for the third concert of the D&W Fresh Market Picnic Pops Series. It reminds me of the Hollywood Bowl, which is one of my favorite venues, said Hall, a native of Indiana who was based in Hawaii for many years.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for picnicking, pre-concert entertainment by accordionist Michael Schaeffer with Melinda Patterson, and childrens activities including face painting, crafts and an instrument petting zoo. One thing that has really excited me is that it draws people from off-island, said Ann Warman, the organizer for the festival. It spreads goodwill all over the county, because its drawing so much from the sister cites. The event brings in musicians, food vendors, arts-and-crafts folks and nonprofit organizations from across the greater Seattle area.John Baker, the stage manager for the event, has worked with the festival since 2008. He has seen many performances this past year and has compiled a list of strong and diverse bluegrass musicians. The 2013 line-up will feature the Smalltime String Band, Joy Mills & Band, Barleywine Revue, Convergence Zone Bluegrass Band, Renegade Stringband, Ricky Gene Powell & The Boys of Greenwood Glenn, and Wayne Taylor & Friends. Bakers selection ranges from oldtime to progressive to country-flavored bluegrass. We try to spread it out a bit to give everyone something theyll like, Baker said. The star of the festival will be Wayne Taylor who, for 21 years, performed as lead vocalist, guitarist and emcee for the U.S. Navy Band, Country Current. The Country Current is the Navys premier country-bluegrass ensemble.
Taylor has performed for four U.S. presidents and has accompanied many bluegrass legends, including Bill Monroe, The Father of Bluegrass. Taylor will bring together an ensemble of equally talented musicians for the festival performance. He has a lot of experience in bluegrass that goes way back, Baker said. The remaining performances featured at this years bluegrass festival will invite the whole spectrum of bluegrass aesthetic.
The Smalltime String Band is the Abrahamson family. Brothers Oliver, 14, on the fiddle and Eli, 10, on the banjo are the bands centerpiece members. The two perform facing each other and signal musical changes with a nod or gesture. Their mom, Terrie Abrahamson, on guitar, and good friend, Tony Mates, on bass, complete the ensemble.
The Renegade Stringband, who some may recognize from their performances at the 2013 Folklife Festival, combines folk and blues into modern sound in a way that almost crosses the bridge into folksy rock n roll. Still, the band continues the bluegrass tradition of contemporary innovation, and offers an impressive performance of harmonizing strings and vocals. Are you still hesitating about where to buy Shun Stone Granite Slabs?
