"His comments all but ensure that the City Council won't vote on a bag ban any time soon. Caraway said he's open to compromise on the issue - which could mean anything from a charge per bag for consumers to some kind of citywide "education" program. Two weeks ago, the full council sent the proposed ban to the quality of life committee for further study after hours of debate that led to no consensus.Caraway, at the time, took a swipe at council colleagues who did not join him in supporting a ban, suggesting that they were pawns of business interests."You got to a few people," he told representatives of the grocery and bag manufacturing industries. "You didn't get to me. I'm not weak."On Monday, Caraway invited industry representatives at his committee meeting to occupy seats normally reserved for city staff. And that was about all the industry folks did - they sat silently while Caraway asked to hear from the audience. As it turned out, the industry representatives didn't need to say much.

Most of the audience members who spoke opposed the measure. The proposed ordinance would not only ban plastic grocery bags but all single-use bags, including paper bags. The proposal comes with a long list of exceptions. But the hope is - or was - to substantially curtail single-use bags, particularly plastic grocery sacks.A growing number of hotel guests are getting food in brown paper bags instead of on silver platters. Affinia Hotels, a collection of boutique hotels in New York City, recently announced that it has partnered with grocery delivery company FreshDirect to offer delivery service to its guests; one of its hotels already offers the service and in the coming months, four more of its New York hotels will add it. The Residence Inn by Marriott, which focuses on guests who stay for a long period of time, offers grocery delivery service in 620 locations across the country.
