Three industries show sizzle on the Space Coast @ granite slabs

Anyone seeking job opportunities in Brevard County might want to look at the health care industry, construction or manufacturing.Those sectors are what the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity sees undergoing the most growth in the Brevard job market during the next eight years.

The data, adjusted and released annually, shows that personal and home care aides will grow the most almost 6 percent by 2020.Home health aides, medical and public health social workers, physical therapists and psychologists show a growth projection above 4 percent, while physical therapy assistants, occupational and physical therapist assistants and aides and registered nurses should grow more than 3 percent, according to the DEO.

The aging population is a factor and so is the economy, said Denise Beaseley, communications director for Workforce Brevard, the area authority on employment. Baby boomers are requesting preventative health care services and services they can receive in the comfort of their home. These services often provide an economical alternative to in-patient health care services.

Thats where companies like Nurse on Call come in, providing physical therapists, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and occupational therapists for services that are covered by Medicare.Even though he said many markets in Florida are saturated with home health care companies, David Flakus, general manager of Nurse on Call said business is growing.

Ive almost doubled since last October here so were doing very well as a company,Shop for wholesale Granite countertops from China! Flakus said. There are some challenges to be successful, but you have to be able to adapt. I think we have over 80 companies that do what we do in Brevard County.Nurse On Call, which has 22 locations statewide, opened its second Brevard office in Viera in February.

Theres always been a nursing shortage, Flakus said. Ive been in this industry going on 12 years and ever since Ive been a part of it, theres always been a massive demand for nursing, based on the baby boomers coming through, so thats why youre seeing these increased numbers because theres going to be a massive need.A bulk of the jobs at the top of the list are in manufacturing and aerospace, a sector local economic development leaders has identified as a target industry. Those jobs require a highly trained and educated employment base and they often pay better wages which boost other sectors of the economy.

The emphasis has helped attract companies like Embraer jets, MidAir USA and AAR Airlift Group, and the due to expansion of companies like Professional Aircraft Accessories in Titusville.That is opposite a trend on Space Coast in the 1990s, when according to the Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security, service jobs increased nearly 17 percent while higher-paying manufacturing jobs shrunk more than 15 percent.

Brevard Workforce has prepared for growth in manufacturing since before the shuttles retirement, Beaseley said. Brevard Workforce and its economic partners recognized the available talent and their skill sets as easily transferable to the skills needed for manufacturing and aviation.Computer-controlled machine tool operators rank fifth on the list for projected growth at 5 percent. Fiberglass laminators and fabricators; aircraft structure, surfaces, and systems assemblers; and structural metal fabricators and fitters show growth above 4 percent.

When Yancey moved in, the playground from the school remained in the yard between the structures. As neighbors began to see him working on the house and school-turned-studio, the question always came up: When are you opening the school? Even the postman asks, Yancey says.

He wasnt, of course, but to honor the school and the parsonage, Yancey has begun the slow process of renovating them with an eye toward sustainability and preservation. Architect Brett Grinkmeyer of BG-Arc and contractor Mark Rehberg of Ranserve were able to keep the same footprint of the former parsonage but create a structurally sound home with modern features mixing with original elements.

The project, which finished in 2011, earned a Four-Star rating Austin Energy Green Building Program for its energy efficiency, reuse of the original longleaf pine floors, new standing-seam metal roof and recycling of all the old materials.

Yancey watched the seven-month project from the studio, where he lived during the remodel. The studios two buildings, joined by an enclosed porch, remain mostly untouched, though he did do some foundation work and added new roofs. He hopes to one day redo the studio and turn part of it into a guest house.

For now, Yancey is working in the studio on a mosaic mural for a Fort Worth site and smaller pieces for a show at the AT&T Executive Education Conference Center. When he makes a mural, he first makes a scale drawing of it. He then puts the mural together a section at a time. He cuts each piece of ceramic tile, then places it. The pieces are temporarily kept together using contact paper. He then transforms the sections of tiles to the site and installs them with mortar, which takes about a month. Yancey also has a mural in the Austin Convention Center and the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center of San Antonio as well as work throughout Illinois, which is where he lived before coming to Texas.

When hes not making mosaic murals, hes painting. The two houses of the studio are filled with examples of his work, which reflect on cultural and racial identity as well as his experiences.

The studio is for work, but the main house is now his sanctuary and place to entertain guests. Its transformation took the home from three cramped bedrooms to two livable ones. The dining room is now in the space the kitchen once occupied. The modern kitchen, perfect for Yanceys love of cooking and entertaining, is on the site of the pastors office .

Instead of the heating and air-conditioning system and stairs to the lower level being in the middle of the living room, the stairs moved to one side and the HVAC went up to the attic while still under the thermal envelope. Instead of spending $500 a month on electricity, Yancey is spending about $150 and he now can actually get the house cool.
